02 November 2005 Worries over spread of dog flu
A strain of canine flu is making its way across the US and is panicking dog lovers in the country. The flu is reported to have mutated from horses and first affected greyhounds in Texas. It is described as an airborne virus and can be passed on in areas where dogs cohabit even by canines passing in the street.
Whilst there is no vaccine currently available, one could be developed. The virus has been known to develop into pneumonia in some cases. Dogs who have caught the disease typically suffer from high fever and a runny nose.
Young and elderly dogs are reported to have been killed by the flu in some cases, which has panicked areas which have not even seen any cases of the disease.
"We're telling our clients to be heads up and pay attention if their pets are coughing," said Mary Giebel, office manager at Quince Orchard Veterinary Hospital in North Potomac. She told the Maryland Gazette that clients had called her every time their dogs coughed.
Experts have said that symptoms can easily be confused with kennel cough, symptoms of which include a lower fever but no runny nose
