05 October 2005 World Animal Week underway
This week marks the start of World Animal Week, an event that applauds all the achievements of the past year. World Animal Week, run by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and supported by the RSPCA, also highlights the importance of continued work towards animal welfare in the future.
Over the course of the last year, the RSPCA has investigated some 109,985 cruelty complaints and handled over one million calls about animal welfare.
The RSPCA also brought about the UK government's commitment to change animal welfare laws, in favour of a new 'duty of care', making it a legal responsibility for pet owners to provide for their pets.
To coincide with World Animal Week, the RSPCA has also developed the Service for Animal Welfare, a special church service designed to increase awareness at churches of the welfare of animals.
To support this campaign, the RSPCA's director general Jackie Ballard will herself be attending an animal welfare service at Arundel Cathedral on October 8th.
