28 October 2005  Winter nights bring extra problems for dog owners
The long dark nights of winter can bring extra problems for dog owners, with a higher potential for accidents to happen due to drivers' poorer visibility.

Pet insurer Tesco warned yesterday that dog owners must ensure they have adequate pet insurance, as a change to the law in recent years has meant that they can be liable for damage caused to vehicles in the event of an accident, even if they were not negligent.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco Pet Insurance, said: "Many dog owners still seem unaware that this change to the law means that they could find themselves facing massive costs from third party claims.

"All dog owners should consider pet insurance as even well trained dogs can be unpredictable in their behaviour."

The insurance provider has seen a 25 per cent increase in the number of personal injury claims over the past year, with their highest claim totalling over £40,000 for an accident caused by a dog running out onto a road and colliding with a motorcyclist.

"Nowadays pet insurance need not be expensive, it's all about shopping around for the right type of cover at the right price," Mr Burns concluded.
