24 November 2005 Winter advice for pet owners
As wintry weather is set to hit most of the UK this weekend the RSPCA has offered advice for pet owners as to how they should treat their pets at this time of year. Other than buying pet insurance, shelter and food, pet owners can do a number of simple things to ensure that their pets are safe and healthy this wintertime.
According to the RSPCA, owners of guinea pigs and rabbits should provide their pets with extra bedding and should be prepared to move the location of their home to a warmer place if necessary, while horses and ponies need extra food and rugs.
"People need to take special care of their pets at this time of year and, in particular, this week when sub-zero temperatures are due to set in", said RSPCA chief veterinary adviser Tim Miles.
"Most dogs have their own coats to keep them warm when outside, but there are circumstances when dog clothing can help.
"Cats too should be kept in as much as possible to avoid them being caught out if snow showers arrive," Mr Miles added.
With the MET Office warning yesterday that freezing temperatures, gales and blizzard-like conditions are set to hit parts of the UK this winter time it would seem apt that owners pay heed to the advice.
