26 April 2007  Vet fees 'can be a big shock'
Owners of cats and dogs have been warned that the cost of vet fees for their pets can be more expensive than they may have thought.

Pet insurance provider Marks & Spencer reports that the high cost of medical treatment for animals can surprise owners, while veterinary bills in the south of England tend to exceed those in the north.

The company has advised animal lovers to invest in pet insurance to cover the cost of any medical bills their pet may require.

"It can be a big shock if you don't have the insurance and you're suddenly presented with a bill, and it can be quite a sizeable bill," said Liz Neild, a spokesperson at the firm.

She added that pet insurance policies have become more customised for each pet in the past few years, resulting in a larger range of premium costs depending on circumstances.

In March 2006, More Than reported that dogs may require increasingly expensive veterinary care as they grow older and become more susceptible to injury and illness.
