14 September 2006  Vet calls for owners to get pet insurance
Pet owners should buy cat or dog insurance to cover the cost of expensive medical treatment, a vet has told the Daily Mirror.

In an investigation into pet medical bills and pet insurance, the paper claims that one in three pet owners has had to make an unexpected trip to the vets.

The use of advanced procedures such as brain scans, combined with the high costs of drugs for pets, can result in massive expenditure on keeping household animals fit and healthy.

Vet Chris Jones told the paper: "It would make life easier for us if more owners had insurance. We wouldn't have to think twice about giving pets the best treatment.

"Many people aren't aware you can get your dog or cat covered for as little as £7 a month."

Pet-ID, a supplier of radio tracking chips for cats and dogs, reports that medical costs for pets can spiral into the thousands, with a £150 cost after swallowing grass seed and a £4,173 bill for hip surgery.
