11 April 2007 Vet bills 'far outweigh' cost of pet insurance
Pet owners who feel that the price of pet insurance is excessive have been warned that the price of veterinary bills can far exceed the cost of cover.Sainsbury's Bank has advised pet owners to ensure their pets are covered against the cost of illness or accidents, especially for long-term conditions including diabetes.
A spokesperson for the firm commented that the cost of general pet insurance is relatively low
"The whole pet insurance industry [is trying] to urge people to take up pet insurance because the cost of not having it far outweighs the cost of actually having it," he said.
He added that pet insurance providers will often provide illustrative case-studies to show the costs of long-term care for sick pets.
Mark Effenberg, chief executive officer of Healthy Pets Insurance, recently claimed that pet insurance was becoming "more mass-market" with an increasing number of cross-breeds being insured, whereas previously the industry was more closely focused on providing insurance for pedigree animals.
