23 May 2006 Uninsured pet owners "delay" seeking vet advice
Pet owners without insurance often delay giving their animal the treatment it needs to avoid paying holiday-hours charges, a survey has revealed. Nearly a third of respondents to esure's survey admitted that they would consider waiting because they could not afford to pay bank holiday or other charges due to a lack of pet insurance.
Jacky Brown, head of pet insurance at esure, said: "It's alarming to know that so many ill pets will be left to suffer this bank holiday because their owners have to weigh up the pound signs against their pet's pain.
"Pet insurance gives owners peace of mind that unexpected vet bills will be paid for - no matter what the time of day or day of the week."
Research for the firm shows that bank holiday vet fees can be up to five times more than regular charges and that a consultation alone can cost £100, which is more than the excess on many pet insurance schemes.
A lack of knowing who to contact was also blamed for owners waiting until after the bank holiday, though esure said that it operated a telephone advice service for worried owners.
With a quarter of owners prepared to risk the lives of their animals by "self-treating" them rather than pay bank holiday fees, the firm urged owners to take out pet insurance to ensure provision of the best treatment.
