09 February 2006 UK pet industry booming
Pet owners in the UK are fast catching up with their US counterparts when it comes to spending money on their pets. Stores in the UK are increasingly responding to the growing trend of the 'humanisation' of pets by providing accessories and products beyond leads and water bowls.
Selfridges' buyer Josi Kiss said that the response to the store's new pet boutique has been "absolutely phenomenal", reports the Telegraph.
Amongst the store's goods are Aquascutum pillows, hard crafted beds, designer jackets and bags.
Sally Brazill-Drewett, owner of the London-based Pets and the City 'fashion and lifestyle boutique', commented: "People who have beautiful homes don't want to sit their lovely dogs on some horrible old beanbag shoved in a corner."
For owners wealthy enough to be able to indulge their pet with gifts from the shop, items on sale include Chinese box beds and Italian-made loungers.
Although a number of people seem willing to shed out hundreds of pounds on luxury accessories, a vast number of British animals are still without pet insurance, which could prove to be one of the cheapest ways of treating pets on a year-round basis.
