22 September 2005 Tropical fish could be discarded pet
A fish that has been found washed up on the beach in Norfolk could be a tropical pet fish that was cast off by its owner. The 8lb porcupine fish is normally found in tropical waters, but was discovered in Winterton, on the North Sea, according to BBC News.
One possible explanation for the fish being found there is that the pet grew too big for its tank, and was let free in the sea.
The fish was later identified by Dr Jim Ellis, a marine biologist from the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) laboratory in Lowestoft.
Dr Ellis said the fish could have come from across the Atlantic on the Gulf Stream, either from north of Scotland, or through the straits of Dover.
The fish is normally found in tropical or sub-tropical seas, or in the Bay of Biscay or the Mediterranean.
