24 January 2006  TV series follows ambitious animal carers
A new series demonstrating the level of training that RSPCA inspectors have to go through is to be shown on Animal Planet from this week.

As part of the seven-month training course, potential inspectors will face challenges such as abseiling, power boating and undercover work as well as dealing with threatening animals such as pythons.

Although the 19 trainees have always wanted to work with animals, the series will uncover which of the number are capable of coping with the emotionally draining aspects of the job.

"The trainees, including an ex-prison officer, an estate agent and a hairdresser, will come face to face with the most outrageous and inhumane cases of animal neglect, but will be forced to keep their emotions in check when dealing with aggressive and irresponsible pet owners," said the RSPCA in a statement.

Such a training process is necessary as the RSPCA often deals with cases of extreme neglect, often brought on by pet owners' unwillingness to pay for veterinary treatment.

Pet insurance can help pet owners to tackle the cost of treatment, which can spiral into hundreds of pounds for more serious illnesses.
