25 October 2005 Survivor pets reach award's finalists
From life-threatening infections to horrific road accidents, the finalists of this year's PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year reflect animals that have come through treatment to survive against the odds. Emphasising the need for pet insurance, the list details animals that needed a variety of operations.
Finalists include Lurcher Sonny, who needed months of treatment after a road accident which almost saw the loss of his leg, and Yorkie Nickie who almost died after an attack from a stray dog.
Hilary Nelson, the award organiser, said: "PDSA's Pet Survivor of the Year awards are a wonderful way to celebrate the fortitude of our pets.
"Outstanding determination to survive can be shown by animals, young or old, large or small, and our finalists clearly demonstrate the qualities PDSA wishes to acknowledge, not forgetting the devoted care of their owners and the skill of the veterinary teams that treated them."
With vets bills stretching well towards the thousand pounds mark after such accidents as highlighted by the finalists list, the awards illustrate the cost and dedication needed to see families' pets on the road to recovery.
