Pet owners are being warned to keep an eye on their pets during hot spells this summer, as even those with adequate pet insurance could be faced with costly bills from a variety of heat-related ailments. Gardens and parks can be hazardous places for pets in hot weather with over-exposure, especially for white pets, leading to sunburn and even skin cancer.
Insect bites and stings can also be an issue for animals, costing on average £60 to treat while swimming in lakes and rivers can lead to ear infections in dogs.
According to insurance company More Than, heatstroke or sunburned pets can cost their owners up to £275, while malignant skin cancer tumours can cost around £350 to treat.
Pet Product Manager at More Than, Mel Everest, said: "While we are all enjoying the sun we should spare a thought for our furry friends who need special care to ensure they don't suffer from the heat.
"Exercise dogs in the early morning or evening to avoid the hottest time of day, and provide lots of water to cool your pet down in the heat."
The RSPCA also warn that animals should never be left alone in a car in hot weather, under any circumstances, as heat stroke can occur in a matter of minutes.
