22 September 2005  Suffering dog is a stuffed toy
An RSPCA investigation into a dog that was apparently abandoned in a London flat has revealed that the suffering animal was actually a stuffed toy.

The RSPCA received calls from worried neighbours about the sound of a distressed pet coming from a flat in an expensive London apartment block.

The organisation was informed that the owners had gone on holiday to Hong Kong and left the animal alone for ten days.

An inspector spent 48 hours spying on the pet on the flat's balcony, before eventually getting a locksmith to accompany him to enter the residence.

To his embarrassment, he found that the supposed pet was nothing more than a stuffed toy dog.

The RSPCA revealed a series of other false alarms it has dealt with in the past.

One caller rang in about a black snake that turned out to be TV cable, while another inspector went to rescue an injured magpie that was actually a black and white Nike shoe.

Whilst the organisation is pleased that members of the public are taking an interest in pet welfare, it is urging people to make sure before calling for help.
