Pet Insurance News
29 October 2005 Stress in the dog house
Lethargy, weight and fur loss are all symptoms that a growing number of dogs across the UK are suffering due to stress. Over one in four dog owners claim that their pet is suffering from stress, and believe that their own hectic lifestyles are to blame.
Research carried out by Direct Line Pet Insurance found that over half of those surveyed described their stressful lives as the reason for their dogs' illnesses.
As the number of dogs suffering from stress and lack of contact grows, so too does the level of vets' bills, highlighting the need for pet insurance.
Chris Price, business manager for Direct Line Pet Insurance said: "Sadly it seems that [dogs'] empathy can lead to them suffering stress themselves and requiring treatment for conditions like diarrhoea, vomiting and loss of fur.
"With the average loss of conventional treatment coming in at £350, treating a dog for stress and its symptoms can be expensive.
"For peace of mind and to avoid large veterinary bills, pet owners should consider taking out pet insurance."
Further lifestyle problems for dogs were made evident this week from findings that pets are increasingly suffering from food intolerances and allergies.
With stress and dietary problems adding to the chance that pets could be involved in accidents, it seems that pet insurance is vital for protecting animals from the growing threats the world poses.
