09 May 2007  Smoking ban 'could risk pet health'
The smoking ban in public places in England, due to come in effect at the start of June this year, could have adverse effects on the health of pets nationwide, it has been claimed.

Research from cat and dog insurance provider More Than reveals that three million owners smoke in the presence of their pet regularly, while the firm predicts that the smoking ban will result in these people spending more time at home smoking in close proximity to their animal.

Melvin Everest, head of pet insurance at the firm, said: "Many pets are helpless to passive smoking and it's sad to see that so many of them are at risk of serious illness because of their owners' behaviour."

He added that if individuals must smoke, they should not spark up a cigarette in the presence of their pets.

MPs voted in favour of a smoking ban in all pubs and private members' clubs nationwide in a House of Commons vote in February 2006.
