18 February 2006 Show dog's bid for freedom continues
The search for a show dog lost at JFK airport has been called off after several sweeps of the 4,900 acre site revealed nothing. Vivi, the three-year old whippet who won an award of merit at the Westminster Kennel Club show this Tuesday, has not been seen since she fled into a marsh next to the airport yesterday.
The dog's owner, Jil Walton, has expressed hope that, scared by the unfamiliar environment and loud noises of the airport, Vivi is hiding in nearby woodland and will eventually return to the airport's boundaries.
"Security officers will continue to keep their eyes open for the dog during their regular rounds," a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.
But a concerned Ms Walton told the Daily News that "when it's cold, she's not happy".
"She's a skinny little thing and I don't know if she'll make it," she added.
Despite the microchip which Vivi wears around her neck and all the effort put in to protecting her, she remains missing proving that adequate pet insurance is always necessary to protect against the sad risk of losing one's animal.
