As Christmas comes increasingly nearer the need for pet owners to be ever more vigilant and armed with pet insurance for seasonal-based illnesses is growing in importance. To prepare pet owners for the pitfalls of the Christmas period the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) has released advice on pet care.
According to OHS, basic care should be taken to ensure that pets do not become disturbed by too many changes in their routine or by different discipline levels when guests are around as this can disrupt their training.
But on a more serious level, OHS advise that pet owners must be cautious about the food they feed their pet from the large meals associated with the holiday season, reports Koin News.
OHS said: "Keep turkey bones away from your pets. These dangerous treats can splinter on consumption and cause grave injury.
"Chocolate should be kept out of your pets' reach all the time. It is a toxic substance to animals, particularly dogs."
Further hazards for pets have been highlighted by other animal groups, for example, damage caused by a dog or a cat ingesting antifreeze could cost the pet owner without pet insurance hundreds of pounds in treatment.
