20 October 2005  Scientists to investigate feline asthma
It is not unusual to hear of pets causing people problem with allergies, yet we rarely hear of the reverse happening.

But new research from the University of Edinburgh's Hospital for Small Animals aims to reveal what specific bacteria causes cats to suffer asthma attacks, in a bid to improve treatment for the condition.

Feline asthma can be caused by any number of human influences, ranging from cigarette smoke to human dandruff, causing them to cough and be short of breath.

It is a disease that affects one in 200 cats, with pedigree oriental breeds more susceptible than most.

With household products known to exacerbate the problem, the need for pet insurance is vital in case your cat suffers.

Feline Advisory Bureau expert, Nicki Reed, based at the hospital, said: "Cats with feline asthma syndrome can be made worse by living in a household where people smoke, or where there are other potential allergens or irritants.

"We find that bringing asthmatic cats into the hospital here and removing them from the standard 'triggers' like dust and smoke can improve their condition."
