01 June 2007 Report lists top cat and dog disease risks
Skin allergies are the top cause of veterinary visits for dogs, it has been reported, while the leading reason for owners taking their cat to the vets is urinary tract infections.A report from US cat and dog insurance provider Veterinary Pet Insurance has listed the top ten reasons why owners are forced to take their animals for medical treatment.
Other high ranking reasons for dog insurance claims included ear infections and benign tumours, while owners are likely to claim on their cat insurance for kidney infections and diabetes.
Dr Carol McConnel, director of veterinary education and services at the firm, said: "Almost all pets will have one of these conditions throughout their life."
She added that while younger pets are prone to eat inappropriate objects and suffer potential stomach complaints, older pets are more likely to contract arthritis and cancerous or benign tumours.
Earlier this week, pharmaceutical firm Orion announced the availability in Finland of an anti-obesity drug for dogs following its approval by European regulatory bodies last November.
