25 August 2005 Rent a pet scheme to help parents
Owners of a pet shop in Swansea have come up with an innovative way to see if children are really committed to looking after a pet, a solution sure to prove popular with parents. Pat and Jim Robinson have started up a rent-a-hamster scheme with a hamster called Freddie, according to BBC News.
For a fee of £5 for one week, parents can take Freddie home to see whether their children do actually really want a pet or whether it is a passing phase.
Mr Robinson said: "It's difficult to tell whether a child will really take to it or lose interest after a few days.
"The idea stemmed from our passion for animal welfare.
"If parents can rent one for a week, they can find out whether it's just a passing phase or not. At the same time, it teaches children about being responsible for a pet."
In addition to Freddie, the pet shop provides a cage, food, bedding and instruction on how to care for the hamster.
