14 September 2005  RSPCA warns of dodgy dealers
Prospective pet owners are being warned by the RSPCA not to buy dogs from dishonest puppy breeders.

The call comes after reports that pet puppies were being sold from the back of a van in the West Midlands area, according to the RSPCA.

RSPCA chief inspector Tim Scott said: "Unscrupulous traders sell puppies that may be sick or dying, and buying a puppy in this way perpetrates the cruel and needless suffering of thousands of dogs bred purely for profit.

"Furthermore, should the dog become ill or have behavioural problems it is unlikely you will ever trace the seller again, as the paperwork issued at the time of sale could turn out to be fake."

The organisation is urging people not to purchase their pet from a puppy farm or from the back of a van.

Instead, they should go to a registered local rescue centre, or a reputable breeder who can show the puppy and their parents before progressing with the purchase.
