14 September 2005 RSPCA to open more affordable clinic
The RSPCA is to open a clinic in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, that will offer pet owners treatment at a reduced rate to help them afford the high cost of vet bills. The move comes in the wake of the case of Griffith Prosser who amputated the leg of his dog himself after he claimed he could not afford to pay vet fees for the operation, according to BBC News.
RSPCA manager for Wales, Kate Jones, said: "A lot of people are put off from taking their animal to a vet because of the costs they may have to face.
"This facility will allow people to get the treatment they need for their animal without worrying about the cost of it."
One in five people in Merthyr Tydfil are on incapacity benefit, so it is hoped that the scheme will help make looking after their pets more affordable.
As much as three quarters of normal vet bills could be saved by attending the clinic.
