07 September 2005  Problem of straying dogs persists
A stray dog is destroyed by local authorities in the UK every six minutes, a new survey has revealed.

The study, carried out on behalf of the Dogs Trust charity, shows that as many as 150 stray dogs are destroyed each week because the owners cannot be traced, because new homes cannot be found or because they are injured or ill.

The number of destructions is actually down by 22 per cent from the previous year, but the number of stray dogs that were rounded up by local authorities showed a fall of just 0.14 per cent, standing at 105,201.

Clarissa Baldwin, Dogs Trust chief executive, said: "It's sad that, though we claim to be animal lovers, the throwaway mentality is so evident in our treatment of our own pets.

"This is the sixth year Dogs Trust has conducted this survey, and we're deeply disturbed that despite increasing awareness of how to prevent it, so many dogs are still allowed to stray. It's also shocking that so many dogs are needlessly destroyed."

The trust also said that neutering was the best way to cut down the number of stray dogs.
