13 February 2007 'Prevention better than cure' on dog weight
Following reports that approximately 40 per cent of dogs in Europe are overweight, which can lead to health complications and expensive pet insurance claims, an online portal for pet lovers has recommended that owners look to prevent such cases arising. While the US Food and Drug Administration has recently granted a licence to a diet pill for dogs, PetClub UK has urged pet owners to exercise their pet and not spoil them with treats.
Chris Jones, publisher of the site, said: "The best form of medicine is the prevention of obesity rather than its treatment.
"The key to shifting the flab from around your hound is a light diet, backed by regular daily exercise."
He added that treats should be given to dogs only as a reward for good behaviour and not too often.
Earlier this year, pet insurance provider Halifax reported that 37 per cent of British cats and dogs are overweight.
