11 August 2006 Portuguese pets' sanctuary
People planning to holiday in Portugal this summer can now take their pets with them and still stay in comfort and luxury, thanks to a new pet hotel which has opened in Tavira in the Algarve. The Portuguese pet hotel, Refugio Animalar e Hotel da Bicharada, is open to all cats and dogs, whether covered by pet insurance or not, offering a solution to pet lovers who don't want to leave their animals behind when they holiday in the Algarve.
Pets can be picked up anywhere in the Algarve, in special animal transport and brought to the hotel, which is managed by the Portuguese animal welfare society, Sociedade Protectora dos Animais (Spa).
The pet hotel will also function as an animal refuge for abandoned pets and has a clinic for the treatment of sick animals.
According to Spa, the pet hotel in Tavira has 28 individual pens and 24 units which can house up to four animals in a clean and comfortable environment.
In order travel abroad safely however, animals need to be vaccinated, be fitted with a special microchip and have a valid pet passport.
