10 August 2007  Portly cats 'run risk of diabetes'
Sedentary cats that spend too much time indoors are at an increased risk of developing diabetes, it has been claimed.

Recently-published research from the University of Edinburgh reveals that many pet owners in Britain are afraid to let their cats out of the house, with the felines consequently not getting enough exercise and eating too much.

Professor Danielle Gunn-Moore, from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, said: "They have little to do all day but eat, sleep and gain weight."

"Unfortunately, just like people, cats will overeat if they are offered too much tasty food, particularly if they are bored."

The study found that overweight cats are three times more likely to develop diabetes than those that are of normal weight.

In January 2007, Halifax Pet Insurance revealed that 37 per cent of British pets are overweight, warning that - as well as an increased risk of contracting diabetes - these cats and dogs have a greater risk of suffering heart disease and arthritis.
