22 October 2005  Poorly pets suffer from diet problems
A new study has revealed that more than half of UK vets are witnessing an upsurge in the number of pets suffering from diet-related illnesses.

The MORE TH>N pet insurance research shows that ten per cent of pets suffer from food intolerances and allergies.

One reason for the growing number is labelling on pet food is poor, and the insurer wants legislation to improve the accuracy of labelling to help pet owners.

Often, when a pet is suffering from a dietary intolerance, the pet owner is unaware, considering it to be just a small illness.

Sophie de Pelet, MORE TH>N's veterinary adviser, said: "Food allergy and intolerance symptoms that pets suffer from are very similar to those seen in humans which can be difficult to attribute to diet alone as this can be caused by so many other disease processes.

"As a result, diagnosis and treatment can be a lengthy and thus costly exercise. Allergy tests carried out by vets can aid diagnosis, but can cost in excess of £200."

As a result, pet insurance is vital to ensure vet bills are covered, action that is supported by 95 per cent of the vets who were surveyed.
