05 April 2006  Poor kennels creating vet bills
A new report has revealed that more than one in ten dogs contract an illness and four per cent sustain an injury after a stay in kennels which results in a trip to the vet for treatment.

Direct Line Pet insurance found that of the 5.4 million pet dogs in the UK, 300,000 are forced to make a trip to the vet for medical treatment after a stay in kennels, costing owners more than £150 in fees each time, which adds up to a total of £46 million being spent nationwide as a result of poor kennel conditions over the course of a dog's lifetime.

Leading veterinary surgeon, Peter Eastwick-Field, commented: "We believe too many boarding establishments are falling below acceptable standards in basic care. On average we see 1-2 dogs a week in the practice during the summer months as a result of time spent in the kennels. Vomiting, diarrhoea and kennel cough are a few of the illnesses commonly related to boarding establishments."

Although 47% of dog owners paid up to £100 on their dog’s stay, nearly half did not know how long their dog was kept in its cage during the day.

A sample of 1,139 UK dog owners was interviewed for the research which was conducted by YouGov.
