27 September 2005 Pets the priority for parting partners
Britons are more likely to argue over ownership of the dog than the house they break-up, according to a new poll. A survey of more than 2,000 adults found that seven in ten of those quizzed would choose custody of the dog over ownership of the house in the event of them leaving their partner.
The poll by Norwich Union also reveals that other pets are not far behind in the list of items wrangled over by couples splitting up. More than two thirds of those questioned (68 per cent) would seek custody of a cat, though just 37 per cent would fight for the car, while 57 per cent would battle for the fish tank.
Leading pet behavioural expert, Carrie Evans, said: "While a third of respondents admit pets and their upkeep can be a cause of arguments it's surprising that almost a quarter of those questioned are prepared to commit to a pet by the time they move in with a partner, if not earlier."
Norwich Union advises petowners to create a "pet-nuptial" agreement, which outlines the roles and responsibilities of pet ownership and prevents a split becoming more acrimonious.
