13 December 2005 Pets set for very merry Christmas
UK pets are set to have a very merry Christmas after new research shows that they are to receive over £400 million worth of presents. Highlighting the need for pet insurance, the study conducted by Halifax found that despite this spending just 15 per cent of owners have cat and dog insurance to safeguard their pet in the event of an emergency.
Roughly 67,000 pet owners however are planning on spending over £1,000 to treat their pets and on average each household will spend £35 on their animals.
"Britons' love affair with their pets is clearly demonstrated by the number of owners that are planning to play Santa Paws this Christmas season," said Frances Wright at Halifax Pet Insurance.
"However we would encourage owners to ensure that they have adequate pet insurance, to cover treatment if pets require veterinary assistance, before they invest in expensive presents."
Lucky UK pets will receive gifts such as toys, food and jewellery; while some pet owners are planning on spending their money on slightly more unusual presents such as advent calendars, DVDs and even pet perfumes.
