11 February 2006 Pets receive five star treatment in the home
Pet owners in America have taken the pet market one step further by designing pet friendly furniture for the house. In what is viewed as a "fast-growing pet environmental enrichment" trend, San Diego-based animal photographer Bob Walker and his wife have added furnishings, window seats and elaborate play structures for their cats to their home and are now designing them for many more people.
Mr Walker, who designs customised interior design layouts for cats lovers, advised pet owners who are keen to purchase furniture for animals: "Leave enough space from the walls for wide-berthed cats to be able to turn around. Spiral staircases are great for youngsters but elderly cats prefer ramps."
His wife, Frances Mooney added: "And whatever you design, ensure that it has human access. Cats hide when they are frightened or ill and you need to be able to get to them at all times."
But for those who cannot afford the elaborate expense of altering their house, pet insurance can be one less expensive way of ensuring that their pets are well looked after.
