22 February 2006  Pets parties on the increase
Pets in the United States are being treated with elaborate parties on their birthdays, according to a recent survey.

Conducted by Veterinary Pet Insurance, the largest provider for cat and dog insurance in the US, the survey found that 58 per cent of the 260,000 respondents said they had hosted a birthday party for their pet.

Parties include cakes, hats and visits from other dogs in the neighbourhood, and are estimated to be thrown by nearly six million pet owners each year.

"Throwing our pets a birthday party is a great way for us to show them how much they mean to us and that they really are an integral part of our family," Brian Iannessa, Veterinary Pet Insurance spokesman, said.

"Just as we would throw our own family members a party complete with friends, food and fun, animal lovers enjoy showing the same appreciation and love for their pets," he added.

For those pet owners who are keen to show their appreciation of their animals on a year-round basis, pet insurance can ensure that animals are covered in the event of illness.
