17 December 2005 Pets lose out to insurance ignorance
Lack of knowledge about pet insurance is putting many people off purchasing a policy, according to financial research company Defaqto. Although roughly 1.4 million households are expected to buy a new pet this Christmas time, many of this number may be seriously undermining the expense of maintaining pets' health throughout the entirety of their lifetimes.
Adding to the need for pet insurance, vets' fees are expected to rise by almost 20 per cent over the next three years, thisismoney.co.uk reports.
Defaqto advises that coupled with a lack of knowledge about pet insurance, the complexities of many policies are deterring people from choosing a policy that could protect their pet from all eventualities.
"The complexity of policy wordings, lack of easy comparability between products and massive differences in premiums quoted may partly explain why the take-up rate is apparently so low," explained Brian Brown, Defaqto's head of insurance.
Pet insurance, a year-round necessity, becomes even more vital at Christmas time, when rich seasonal food and products such as de-icer can seriously affect pets' health if ingested.
