13 August 2007  Pets 'living longer than ever' with healthcare advances
As a result of improvements in animal health care, pets are living for longer than ever, it has been claimed.

PDSA reports that a tenth of cats and dogs treated by veterinary charity are now between 11 and 14 years of age, marking a new society of "pet pensioners".

The organisation has launched its own online pet pensioners survey to further highlight the increasing numbers of elderly pets in Britain.

Elaine Pendlebury, senior veterinary surgeon at PDSA, said: "Today more than ever before there is plenty of pet care information and advice available to pet owners at the touch of a button."

She added that, in conjunction with improvements in treatment, this information is assisting pet owners in helping their cats and dogs live a long and healthy life.

Last month, Laura Bennet, founder of Embrace Pet Insurance, advised owners to buy cat and dog insurance when a pet is younger to potentially take advantage of cheaper premiums.
