14 February 2006  Pets have accents too
People are not the only mammals with regional accents, as a new study claims that dogs across the country make distinctive sounds as well.

New research using a panel of experts in canine behaviour found that dogs have regional accents, with barks and growls differing according to geographical location.

An exclusive report in The Mirror states that the 'woof guide' found that the sounds dogs made differed in pitch and tone across the UK, with the most distinctive noise coming from those in Liverpool and Scotland.

The researchers asked dog owners to call and leave a recorded message of both their own voice and their dog barking and growling and the experts concluded that some dogs sounded 'more posh' than others, claiming that pets often mimicked the tone and pitch of their owner’s voice.

Tracey Gudgeon, of the Canine Behaviour Centre in Cumbria, told the newspaper: "It seems dogs are more able to imitate stronger, more distinctive accents than softer ones. It's one of the ways they bond with their owner."

The survey was published to coincide with the special edition DVD re-release of the 1955 Disney animated flick Lady and The Tramp.

Dog owners, wherever they are from in the UK, should ensure that their pets are fully insured in case they become ill or go missing.
