29 September 2005  Pet survives knife strife
Dogs are known for trying to eat anything and everything they can lay their paws on.

Well one dog from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, bit off more than she could chew, yet amazingly survived.

Elsie, a 6-month-old St. Bernard puppy, incredibly swallowed a 13-inch serrated knife, nearly as long as her body.

Her owner, Jane Scarola, only realised something was wrong after four days, and immediately took Elsie to her vet, Dr Jon-Paul Carew.

Dr Carew took an X-ray and could not believe what was before his eyes, thinking a technician "had superimposed a knife underneath the dog".

After a two-hour operation, the knife was successfully removed and Elsie is back at home and fighting fit.

Ms Scarola thinks that one of her six other pets must have knocked the knife off a kitchen counter – and now she has decided to frame it and give it to the vet that saved her pet's life.
