13 June 2006  Pet pampering proves increasingly popular
Pet owners are increasingly splashing out to indulge their furry friends with around a quarter of owners having pet insurance policies, new business figures show.

Having risen by nearly a third in the last six years, the pet industry is now worth around £3.8 billion according to the BBC Money Programme.

Healthcare for cats and dogs and the pet food industry are key spending areas, with the pet food industry being worth £1.9 billion and the pet insurance industry making £265 million each year.

Sally Brazill-Drewett, of Pets and the City in Greenwich, commented: "I think as Brits we're not embarrassed anymore to be seen spending money on animals that we love."

Catriona Marshall, trade and marketing director of the UK's biggest pet chain, Pets at Home, suggests that whether it is young couples delaying starting a family or older people suffering from "empty nest syndrome" people are increasingly treating their pets "like surrogate children".

A recent survey by specialist accident and health insurer Combined Insurance recently revealed that people are more likely to take out pet insurance than protect themselves with accident or income protection insurance.
