Pet ownership linked to asthma

04 January 2006 Pet ownership linked to asthma
Pet ownership may increase the chances of developing asthma, according to a new study. Other research has found that responsibilities of pet ownership, including pet insurance and the costs of food and shelter, can be offset by positive health benefits.
However, the latest study attributes part of the causes of asthma to living in close proximity to animals.
Commenting on the findings, lead author of the study, Paul Blanc, said: "Where we live doesn't predict our fate, but it surely links to our health.
"We should identify the key environmental agents and work to decrease how much people are exposed to them in their daily lives."
Although pet ownership may be a factor in increasing the chances of developing asthma, the researchers also highlighted that it is only a possibility and that asthma is a complex problem which cannot be attributed to solely one factor.
Other factors highlighted by the report include proximity to high traffic flow, industrial pollution, water-damaged houses and social environmental stress.
