03 August 2006  Pet owners warned: allow time for passport processing
Pet owners planning to take their animals abroad with them this summer are being warned to ensure they leave enough time for their pet passport application.

Introduced in 2000 by the British government, the pet passports, introduced under the pet travel scheme (Pets) allow certain vaccinated and microchipped animals to travel to and from certain destinations without needing to be quarantined.

According to the Shields Gazette, many cat and dog owners are setting themselves up for some last minute stress and heartache though, as they have underestimated the amount of time it takes to make a pet passport application.

Head nurse at Blythman and Partners veterinary practice in South Shields, Donna Heron, said: "Unfortunately, many pet owners do not fully understand the process involved and simply don't leave enough time for the necessary elements to be completed.

"A number of our clients have made arrangements for accommodation and transport, only to have them dashed at the last minute when they find a pet passport can't be issued in time."

Animals heading overseas also need to be issued with an official Pets certificate and the whole passport process can take up to six months.

Pet owners are also reminded to take care when travelling with animals in hot weather and never to leave an animal alone in a hot car.
