24 February 2006  Pet owners urged to be prudent
Pet owners are being advised to take a few simple key precautions to try to cut the costs on their animals.

With pet insurance costs and veterinary bills rising, experts such as Consumer Reports' Amanda Walker say it is prudent to take as many preventative measures as possible.

Ms Walker advised that the choice of vet was one way in which owners could reduce their costs.

As well as finding a vet with strong recommendations, she noted the importance of making regular annual visits in order to catch any potential problems early amid rising care costs.

"It's estimated that, on average, cat owners spent more than $500 on medical care last year, while dog owners spent even more - nearly $800," she commented.

Another money-saving tip was to get second opinion on both medical operations and drugs.

"If you need a prescription drug, you may be able to find it at your local pharmacy, or a less expensive generic version may be available," she noted.

It is estimated that there are ten million cats and eight million dogs in Britain alone, with the costs associated with each animal continuing to escalate.
