18 May 2006  Pet owners must guard against disease
Household pets, whether covered by pet insurance or not, could be potential carriers of infectious diseases, a new study in the United States has found.

Recent research conducted by the team of veterinary medicine researchers in the US found that in America where there are tens of millions of pet cats and dogs, many of which may not be covered by pet insurance, pet owners could be at risk of diseases such as flu pandemics through pet to owner contact, according the Earth Times.

Scott Weese and Stephen Kruth, doctors of the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, agreed with the findings of the report, stating: "The potential for household transmission through pets should be considered for any new disease where information is incomplete regarding potential hosts and the risk for interspecies transmission.”

In the UK, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) states that all dogs should be vaccinated against potentially fatal diseases and receive regular vaccination boosters as well as being wormed, which can be expensive without adequate pet insurance.
