04 May 2007 Pet owners get travel advice
Since the introduction of pet passports seven years ago, pet owners in the UK have found it easier to take their cat or dog abroad with them on holiday, it has been claimed, though there still exists some confusion on the correct procedure.Pet insurance provider Saga has issued a reminder to pet owners of all the necessary steps that must be undertaken for it to be possible to take a pet abroad.
These include fitting a cat or dog with a microchip, vaccinations against rabies and application for a Pet Travel Scheme certificate.
"It is also important to remember that it?s not just you that needs be insured when travelling abroad," the company states.
"Pet medical costs are expensive in the UK and can be an added difficulty overseas."
Cats and dogs must also be treated for both tapeworm and ticks a maximum of 48 hours before returning to Britain.
Earlier this year, Halifax Pet Insurance reminded owners that it can take up to six months to fully complete the procedure of receiving a pet passport and urged those wanting to take their animals abroad to apply sooner rather than later before their holiday.
