23 September 2005 Pet owners asked to show dental diligence
Pet owners are being urged to take better care of their animal's dental hygiene, after research shows just how much we underestimate its importance. Vet charity PDSA conducted a survey that showed that two thirds of people think it is natural for a dog or hamster to lose its teeth as it ages, but this is not the case, The Scotsman reports.
The same number of people also thought it was fine for their pet to suffer from bad breath, yet this can be a key indication that the pet has teeth problems.
The poor state of pets' teeth increases the importance of having pet insurance, as well as taking pre-emptive action to help your pet.
Senior PDSA vet Elaine Pendlebury said: "Our own statistics and the new survey results suggest that very few pet owners carry out a regular dental care programme for their pets - which is very worrying.
"Just as we care for our teeth on a daily basis, the same rules apply for our pet's teeth."
Dental disease can affect the health of a pet in other ways, such as causing heart and kidney problems.
