24 August 2007  Pet obesity 'costing millions'
A US-based pet insurance firm has reported that overweight cats and dogs are costing pet owners and insurers millions of pounds each year in obesity-related treatment.

Veterinary Pet Insurance notes that during 2006 it paid out over $14 million (£7 million) for the treatment of obese pets, accounting for seven per cent of all medical claims by volume for the year.

The firm advises owners to take obesity in their pets seriously, as it is a major health risk that can shorten the life of their cat or dog.

Dr Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary officer of the firm, said: "Pet obesity begins with excessive kindness.

"Food is the primary way some pet owners demonstrate love to their pet."

She added that if food becomes a behavioural device or sign of affection for a pet, it can become hard to properly regulate its diet.

VPI notes that pet insurance can protect against obesity-related illnesses, in addition to routine care and emergencies.

This week, Research & Markets reported a significant growth in pet insurance policies being taken out during 2006.
