06 August 2005 Pet insurance vital to avoid damages
Dog owners are being urged to take out pet insurance for their favourite friends after new research revealed that nearly half of people in the UK would sue a dog's owner if something untoward happened. More Than has discovered that some 45 per cent of people would take action if the dog was responsible for causing an accident or some kind of injury.
This will come as worrying news to the 83 per cent of dog owners who do not have pet insurance, leaving them unprotected if something should happen.
Under the 1971 Animals Act, pet owners are legally responsible for damages caused by their pets, and on average such claims cost an average of £500, with a further £450 in vet bills, according to Direct Line pet insurance.
David Pitt, head of insurance for More Than, said: "Unlike cats which are seen as being free spirits, dogs are legally the owners responsibility.
"Therefore a court could decide the owner is responsible if their dog causes any accident or injury - ranging from a car accident to biting the postman."
