15 November 2005  Pet insurance vital for pedigree pet owners
Owners of pedigree pets have been urged to ensure they have adequate pet insurance as they may be more susceptible to certain illnesses than cross breeds.

Sainsbury's Bank included the warning in its new Pet Insurance Charter as it believes that many policies have not evolved with the increasing costs of veterinary treatment, potentially leaving pet owners with large vets bills that they might not be able to meet.

Research conducted by the company found that 37 per cent of pedigree dog owners with pet insurance will claim on their policies in comparison to around 22 per cent of owners of cross breeds who have cover, while the corresponding figures for cats are 24 per cent to 16 per cent.

"While it is imperative all cats and dogs are adequately insured, our experience is that pedigree owners are more likely to call on their pet insurance for illness and disease than owners of crossbreeds because their animals are more likely to suffer certain hereditary illnesses, " commented David Pickett, pet insurance manager for Sainsbury's Bank.

"One of the biggest costs of owning an animal can be vet fees, so good quality pet insurance can help ensure that should your dog or cat become ill and need treatment, you can afford to pay for it," Mr Pickett added.

More than 350 inherited diseases have been identified in pedigree dogs by the Animal Health Trust, including skin and heart conditions.
