14 March 2006  Pet insurance 'varies with breed of dog'
Pet owners have been advised to consider how the breed of their dog can affect long-term vet bills.

Pet insurance is vital to cover the costs of keeping animals healthy, but a report from insuresupermarket.com has suggested that some owners should consider pet insurance particularly for certain breeds of dogs.

Although pedigree dogs can be some of the most expensive to insure, some more commonplace breeds such as Labradors, Alsatians and Retrievers can also prove costly due to the large number of claims typically made against them.

Long-term problems such as arthritis, which needs ongoing treatment, can total thousands of pounds worth of vet bills.

"If you're thinking of getting a Labrador or a similar breed, make sure you've got a good level of insurance. It will cost a bit more but for the peace of mind provided it's really worth it," said Richard Mason of insupermarket.com

"Vets fees can run into the thousands and nobody wants to stop their animal from having the necessary treatment."

Mr Mason added that before purchasing pet insurance, owners should consider factors such as whether there is a maximum amount which can be claimed for each condition and if there is a limit on the length of time that people can claim for a particular illness.
