05 January 2006 Pet insurance urged for travelling pets
Despite many pets not being covered by pet insurance, more animals than ever are travelling around the world with their owners. According to a report in the Telegraph, nearly 1,000 pets have enrolled in Virgin Atlantic's frequent flyers' programme for pets.
Since 2003 'Pet Paws' has carried 3,000 animals, with 596 dogs and 402 cats registered with the scheme.
Pet insurance is advised however in the event of the pet becoming ill or injured.
Commenting on the scheme, Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson said: "Having pets of my own I know how important it is for our passengers to feel that their pets are well looked after when travelling.
"This reward scheme is unlike any other and will set a precedent amongst the four legged frequent flyers," he added.
Pets travelling under the scheme can obtain 'paw prints' in their passports, which can be exchanged for gifts, and welcome packs including t-shirts, flying jackets and toys are given to pets on their first flight.
