16 November 2005 Pet insurance urged as winter hazards emerge
Pet insurance is being urged for cat and dog owners with the Christmas season and its potential hazards fast approaching. With warnings already circulating about the problems rich seasonal food can have on pets' health, the news today that the salts used for extra grip in icy weather can harm pets has added to the need for pet owners to ensure they have adequate cat and dog insurance.
Rock salt and salt-based products are often used in cold weather to melt the ice and to prevent slipping, but few people are aware that these can pose a problem for pets' health.
According to the American Veterinary Association and the American Animal Hospital Association, salts and salt-based products can cause dogs to suffer from inflammation of the paws and serious gastrointestinal problems including vomiting and internal burns of the mouth and digestive tract.
In response to an Opinion Research Corporation national survey, which found that nearly two thirds of those surveyed were unaware of the dangers posed to pets, one American entrepreneur has developed an ice melter that will not harm pets.
Before this type of product hits mainstream shops, owners are advised to keep an eye on their pets this Christmas time and to check their pet insurance is up-to-date.
